Windows 7: Preparing your desktop… Woe

Update (Oct 12, 2009): This seems to be a problem that occurs when Symantec Endpoint Protection is installed.

I’m beta testing Windows 7 RC, and it’s shaping to be a very nice operating system. I just hope this “Preparing your desktop…” problem will not trickle down to the final version. It seems related to the “Your User Profile Was Not Loaded Correctly!” problem I had with Windows Vista. Whenever this happens, I get a blank desktop and the theme is set to Windows Classic (non-Aero). It is obviously still related to User Profiles.

Location is not available: C:\Windows\system32\config\systemprofile\Desktop refers to a location that is unavailable. It could be on a hard drive on this computer, or a netwrok. Check to make sure that the disk is properly inserted, or that you are connected to the Internet or your network, and then try again. If it still cannot be located, the information might have been moved to a different location.C:\Windows\system32\config\systemprofile\Desktop refers to a location that is unavailable.

Jeet Windows 7 has another hurdle in front of it. Did you read about lack of internet explorer in Windows 7 shipped in Europe? These guys will ensure Firefox (or now Chrome) will become the most popular browser soon.

Adam Alfia I haven't experienced this problem in Vista, although I've yet to try Windows 7. Seems strange that the problem would resurface after being resolved in Vista SP1, especially since 7 takes all the good and none of the bad from Vista.

Traxxas Rustler I am yet to tryout Windows 7. I have researched about this and lots of comments about Windows 7 state that its all of the good Vista has to offer.

Christian Hollingsworth I've seen mention of this error on many sites lately - and also hope it gets ironed out before the final version. Thanks for the insight.

Roberto Sánchez Well time has passed and today April 23, 2010 I'm getting the same error in the fully released Spanish version of Win 7 64 bits on a month old new Dell Studio. To my surprise the error has been out for a while -I can see here- and if you search Microsoft knowledge base nothing is still mentioned, does anyone know how to fix it? Ill be back to you if I do. Thanks for reading.
