HP Deemed Most Unreliable Laptop / Netbook Brand by SquareTrade Study

3 Year Laptop Malfunction Rates by Manufacturer: HP is the worst!Source:  http://www.squaretrade.com/htm/pdf/SquareTrade_laptop_reliability_1109.pdf

Study on over 30,000 laptops and netbooks covered by SquareTrade warranty indicates HP models have a higher malfunction rate even just after 2 years of use. Failures projected to be even greater just a year later.

I’m not surprised.

Texx Smith Wow! I'm shocked! I've had a HP (Pavillion) on my desktop for several years and it was tortured by fluctuating electricity for the first year of it's life and high temperatures in the office for the next two and it still runs like a champ. Never had an HP laptop though. I'm in the market to get one but I'm thinking it probably won't be an HP.

The surprise is "Asus" which most people consider to be an inferior brand. Go figure.

Tim Carello Wasn't the HP supposed to be the quality brand with uality laptops?? I'm surprised to see so many failures of their laptops.

I used to have a fujitsu Siemens laptop that broke down three times in two year. Now I have a HP and no problems.

Best, Tim

John Uhh, really? My laptop is an HP. Not crazy about this news, but then again I'm not surprised, I've read reviews of other HP laptops (not mine) that were awful, and I know the customer service blows.

Leone Parette I am surprised by this article. I grew up with Hewlett Packard being one of the best companies in the US. Their printers were always at the top of the list in terms of reliability.

Then there was the purchasing of Compaq and the fines and near arrests of the Board.

And, now this.

I know the Packard family regrets the day they ever turned over control to others.

The further away from the original engineers and the pride of engineering that went into the original name, the more vulnerable a company like HP becomes evidently.

A lot of people got a lot of awards for outstanding leadership to achieve this lack of product reliability.

Robet Love In a previous life I owned a computer repair shop, hp was high on the list for repairs for it's market share. Personally after using Windows based pc's and Windows in general all my life I've made the switch to a Mac iBook for most of my online activities and work. I do use a Dell XP for some things but I prefer the Mac because it just works!

Robert

Zen Cart Seriously? I'm quite surprised. I thought HP is one of the top notebook and netbook brands.

Jeremy Ashburn I've had two Toshiba laptops during the past 5 years and I've loved them. I just bought the Toshiba T135-S1309 - an 3.9 pound ultra thin with 13.3-inch screen and an 8 hour battery life. It's awesome! So great to finally have a laptop that won't die in 2-3 hours. In April 09 I bought an HP netbook from BestBuy & returned it. I wasn't impressed with HP's netbooks.

z.mastylo This is a reply to Texx Smith.

Who says ASUS is inferior? I don't know WHERE you heard that but they're 100% WRONG. All the biggest overclocking sites, and reviewing sites praise ASUS for their quality, and reliability. I own 4 computers either built from ASUS components or built by ASUS. Two laptops, and two gaming rigs, the latter I built myself.

I myself, was NOT surprised by seeing Toshiba and ASUS on the left of the graph.

Great screenie Carlo!

Jess Martins I completely agree. My previous laptop was a hp media center and within few months of purchase, my screen kept blanking out. After futile efforts and their abhorrent after sales services, They finally managed to tighten the screws connecting the screen to the base of the laptop. But in a couple of months the problem re occurred. This time i chose to sell my laptop and choose a completely new brand.

John Behr The only thing worse than HP's reliability is their customer service and unwillingness to take responsibility for the defective merchandise they put out on the market. I will personally never purchase another product from this unethical and arrogant company.
